1 [Aymon]. HISTOIRE DES QUATRE FILS AYMON: TRES NOBLES ET TRES VAILLANS CHEVALIERS
Paris H. Launette 1883 A limited edition of 200 was published, but since this copy is not numbered, it is apparently the ordinary edition Fine
Quarto. [vi], 224p, [xvi]. Illustrated by Eugene Grasset (1845-1917) with color-printed photo-relief illustrations (Chromotypogravure), printed by Charles Gillot. Illustrations on every page, including full-page plates, vignettes and borders. Bound in maroon morocco with marbled sides and endpapers, t.e.g., the spine with gilt titles and panel ornaments, a figure of a sword and helmet runs vertically through the panels in five colors of onlays. Housed in felt-lined cloth box with leather spine label

"For this late popular version of the chansons de geste of Charlemagne and his barons, Charles Gillot persuaded Grasset to provide designs in the 'Merovingian' style through which he could demonstrate the possibilities of chromolithography for book illustration... Histoire des quatre fils Aymon, though its initial reception was mixed, became a turning point in the history of book illustration. As is remarked in its introduction, the legends of which it is composed have been given 'the most luxurious form that a book can achieve' (p.6)... In technical excellence Gillot showed himself to be the equal of any of the chromolithographic masters of the preceding decades... Histoire des quatre fils Aymon proved an inexhaustible source for other artists as Art Nouveau became the dominant style of the period." Ray. The Art of the French Illustrated Book 1700 to 1914. No. 357.
