Inscribed and signed by the author "Mrs. E. Maria (?), with the regards of The Author. April 2, 1883." Also with a small carte de viste by Sarony's possibly signed on front and back by Johnson.
"The author was associated with Garrison from the beginnings of his movement and served first as a temporary editor of The Liberator, and later as editor of the Ohio Anti-Slavery Bugle, the Pennsylvania Freeman, and the National Anti-Slavery Standard. Because he feels himself to be an integral member of the cause, Johnson shifts his focus from Garrison alone to include the figures and entire history of the American abolition movement. Many incidents in the violent history of slavery are covered, as are prominent and many obscure figures of the antislavery drive." (Ball and Martin. No. 129).
