"Various photographic mediums were increasingly used in color book illustration from the mid-1880s. Whitefield illustrated most of his books on colonial New England with chromolithographs, but in this publication he included a new process invented by the Heliotype Printing Company of Boston, printed color on top of a photographic image. The plate has an oddly three-dimensional quality." Reese. Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books. No. 109.
