"Alice Neel died soon after she selected the images which would illustrate Poe's tale. The last of these--a haunting, skeletal head--is a self-portrait. Perhaps in anticipation of her own death, Neel chose not to trust the attendant inspiration to the hands of a lesser artist, but instead kept the creativity for herself, prematurely painting her own, powerful tribute between the pages. Whatever the inspiration behind the images, the fact of their visual empathy for the text is such that they stun, rather than simply embellish, and with an uncanny, almost uncomfortable confidence probe, rather than illustrate."
