London: Casssell and Company, 1894-97.
First British Edition. Four tall quarto volumes. Illustrated with 48 full-page steel engravings and about 800 wood engravings. Original publisher's aqua cloth over beveled boards, a.e.g., the spines and upper covers with gilt titles and elaborate ornamentation in gilt and red. Trifling rubbing to extremes, owner's small ink stamp on flyleaves, but quite clean and crisp copies - nearly as new. All engravings pristine. Item #22489
"This is one of the great books of American illustration. Linton says of it, 'The best landscapes engraved in this country (and nothing of the later years in England will equal them) are to be found here.' S.R. Koehler called it an epoch-making work." (Hamilton 737, for the American edition).
Publisher's flyer laid into three of the volumes. The English edition is printed on finer paper than the American. The format seldom seen and very rarely in such excellent condition.
