"Superficially an orchidaceous dandy with a private income he was at heart more of an aesthete, a solitary hard-working dedicated perfectionist. THE FLOWER [Beneath the Foot]... is more exotic and assured than his earlier work that seens to be leading up to it. It combines impressionist word-painting, elusive dialogue with a wisp of devotional fragrance... of all his books, [it is] the worthiest of Forster's praise and Auden's passionate admiration." (Cyril Connolly. The Modern Movement. No. 44).

A sixth volume limited to 60 copies containing The Artificial Princess was issued in 1934.
