"Assuming that prospective readers of Byron had often been intimidated by the learned notes found in many collections of the author's work, [Wheeler and Westcott] decided to discard the 'brackets and asterisks' and the 'unsightly storehouse of fine print,' the dense commentaries, and retain only Byron's notes, which would be conveniently located as close as possible to the passages they explained or supplemented.... The result, they promised, would be a 'clear view, a legible revelation of Byron's dual intellect; the humane, casual, supremely sincere commentator in one column, the haughty and sumptuously gifted rhapsodist in the other.'" (Published in Paris. pp 336-337.).
