"The enterprise was magnificent, the production excellent throughout. It was too good for the public. In a delightful introductory 'apology' to the first number the editor stated frankly that they had no 'mission'. But, unconsciously perhaps, they most certainly had. Their mission was to try to convince the dear old British public that a magazine need not necessarily be exactly like all its predecessors, that it was possible to be frivolous and light hearted and yet produce excellent work, and that a good drawing was worth printing, even if it had no joke or quotation from a story beneath it... From this point of view it is undoubtedly the most artistic periodical publication we have ever had." (Thorpe. English Illustration: The Nineties. p/. 173-4).
