First edition. Large Paper, Extra-Illustrated. Two volumes extended to four. Quarto. viii (ii), 332p; 333-670p; vii, 414p; 415-823p. Each volume with title page and frontispiece. Extra-Illustrated with 165 portraits and views, some plates in three states, proofs before letters, colored, etc. In volume 3, opposite page 46, there are two stanzas in Byron's hand with signature (although the manuscript is questioned.) Bound by Riviere & Son in full blue morocco, t.e.g., the spine with gilt titles in two panels, all other panels and covers and turn-ins with borders of five fillets. Some foxing on the title pages from the frontispieces, some darkening to the edges of the scarlet endpapers, hinge of first volume tender, all else fine. Housed in felt-lined boxes with gilt-titled blue leather spines. Item #24488

The Robert Hoe copy with his leather bookplate in each volume, and subsequently with that of Roderick Terry (1893-1933). (Terry's bookplate in first volume with image scratched off). Robert Hoe III (1839-1909), first president of the Grolier Club and a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
